Mat Pilates
Core strength, balance and flexibility using your own body weight.
Mat pilates is where the method began. No equipment; the resistance comes from your own body weight. That doesn’t make it easy, with no help from springs, the control is entirely yours.
The biggest advantage of mat work is that it’s portable. You can repeat the sequence you learn in the studio at home, in a hotel, on holiday. Paired with equipment work, the two feed each other.
Who it’s for
- People who want to learn the fundamentals from scratch
- Those who want a home routine to support their equipment work
- People who travel and can’t come regularly but want continuity
How a class goes
Not a fixed template, it changes with your level and how you feel that day. The general flow:
- 01
Breath and finding the core
Lateral rib breathing and engaging the deep abdominals, the base of every movement.
- 02
Classic mat sequence
Fundamental moves like the hundred, roll-up and single leg stretch, adapted to your level.
- 03
Side-lying and quadruped series
Hips and shoulder stability. Small props (band, ball, ring) can be added.
- 04
Stretch
Closing with spinal rotation and hip openers.
What it builds
- Awareness and endurance in the deep abdominals
- A sequence you can repeat at home
- Gradual gains in flexibility and range of motion
- Breath control
Frequently asked
- Is mat pilates easier than the reformer?
- No, it’s different. On the reformer, springs assist some movements; on the mat there’s no such support. Some people find the mat more demanding.
- What do I need to do it at home?
- A mat and enough clear space for your height. If small props are needed, we tell you which ones to get.
What else is there?
One class is enough, the body tells the rest.
We assess in the first session and build the programme together. So you can see the studio and meet your instructor before joining.
